The end of another successful year for the Sailing Association Mar Menor (our 7th since we formed) approaches and it’s time for us to celebrate the festive season. This year we chose La Perdiz Restaurant, Poso Aledo, near San Javier, a very Spanish venue, and we were not disappointed. The staff was very attentive and kept the food and wine flowing course after course, including a seemingly endless supply of succulent gambas. The round tables made the conversation lively, as if it needed encouragement. And, of course we danced the night away with local Spanish couples joining in with us.
It was the last event of a busy year’s social programme for SAMM, lead by Oakley Petts and his Social Scene team of six ladies. We may be rivals on the water on Race Days and on our Bowling Alley evening visits but it’s the social programme that makes friends – and the odd romance! With a steady state membership of around 150, including a good sprinkling of active German, Dutch, Scandinavian and Spanish friends, there is always somebody who has a skill or knowledge and the willingness to impart it to others, whether it’s sailing related or not. Even now our Social team and Racing Committee are debating their plans to give us all an exciting year ahead in 2013.
We would like to take this opportunity to give a special vote of thanks to the staff of the Infanta Cristina Sailing Centre in Los Narejos, where our operations are based and especially to Auri Isabel Sintas Rodriguez, who tells us what we can and can’t do and to Susannah, who keeps us supplied with hot coffee and tapas when we come off the water. The three SAMM Kings will be visiting them soon!
I wish you all Feliz Año Nuevo. If you want to learn more about us come along to our AGM at Infanta Cristina at 1100 9th January 2013, details at www.sailingmarmenor.com
