10-pin Bowling Evening on Tuesday 21st & Walk on 28th Feb

All members are reminded that there is a 10 pin bowling evening on Tuesday 21st Feb – this Tuesday – at ‘La Bolera’ in Dos Mares on the N332 between San Javier and San Pedro, at 7pm. The Social Scene Team look forward to some good support from you all.

Also, there will be a moderate walk on Tuesday 28th Feb in the Campo Verde area at 10.00am followed by a Menu del Dia. We will announce the meeting place very soon and we need to have names for the Menú lunch so that it can be booked. The lunch will be €8.50 at the Treetops Restaurant in Campo Verde.

SAMM Racing 2011

As nice as it is, sailing around the Mar Menor, why not take your sailing experience to the next level by racing your boat?

SAMM, a friendly bunch of mixed Nationalities but mostly British, runs a program of Race Days throughout the Spring and Autumn from the “CAR Infanta Cristina” Los Narejos, just south of St. Javier airport. They use the British RYA Portsmouth Yardstick handicap system to race a mixed fleet of dinghies, catamarans and small day boats. A cruiser class could be included given sufficient interest.

You do not need previous racing experience as many of the current competitors did not sail before they came to Spain. The entry fee is a very modest €5 per person per race day, the money being used to run and maintain the support boat.

A “Round the Island” warm up race opens the Spring Series on Sunday 18^th March with racing then every alternate Sunday untill the end of June.

Another new boat share Group for SAMM?

German Member Andreas Budde would like to form a new boat share Group, to purchase a new Dehler VA 18 yacht. The cost of such a boat is about 14,000 to 15,000 Euros and he already has two friends interested. A group of 8 – 12 people would bring the cost of a share down to about 1,500 Euros.

Orphanage Day

A Note to All SAMM Members re our Charitable involvement:

Orphanage Day;

Four Shoestring Members turned out today to try and bring smiles to some unfortunate children based in Elche. Six children arrived with minders, 4 boys and a couple of girls. It was a cold and blustery day, and having had a sorte in UNO it was decided to reduce risks and simply use a Weta.

All the children had a sail and appeared delighted. After a spot of lunch they returned home. I put forward a proposal that we could do this once a month – perhaps the 3rd Saturday of the month. We’ll wait until the children have had a chance to discuss the matter and see how they wish to proceed.

In summary it was a good day, brought some pleasure, if not sunshine, into the lives of some children. Thanks to Janice, John and Edward for excellent support. There will be future opportunities for more participation from within the SAMM Groups.
