Catamaran

This group was formed in August 2008 when John Curtis purchased the 23ft Stryder Club Catamaran “Hamoor” and loaned it to the group on a permanent basis. The concept Sailing For All” has aways been at the heart of the Group.

In early 2011 the Group purchased the boat from John Curtis. This was funded from membership fees, trips and many members bought “shares” in Hamoor to raise some additional capital. Since then, we have made many improvements, not least among those a new engine was purchased.

We are very fortunate that we have in the group a wide variety of skills.
Engineers, Mechanics, Carpenters a Car Body Repairer so we can take on all of the maintenance work “in house”.

Hamoor can easily accommodate 8 people for the day and is very non sailor friendly as she does not heel over like a mono hull and is therefore very stable.
The boat always sails with one of our own qualified skippers in charge. Members
contribute €10 per day and their non member guests €15 per day. The skipper of
course does not pay. All of the money that we collect is used for the upkeep of
the boat and improvements. Those that have owned boats will know that the
definition of a boat is a hole in the water into which you throw money. How
true!

Our members have varying sailing skills from a former Yachtmaster Instuctor through to day skippers and to complete novices. Many of our members are happy to go out just a couple of times a year, often when they have friends and family over. They simply book the boat out with our co ordinator who finds them a skipper unless they have one lined up themselves. The day is usually spent cruising the Mar Menor. We usually anchor of off a beach, perhaps with a bar nearby, for a swim and lunch. We may visit one of the
islands. There are many options in the Mar Menor so no matter what the wind
direction we can always find a good stopping place. It is certainly another way
entertain the visitors. Others enjoy the sociable maintenance days and others
sail frequently in regular groups. It depends on what you want to do.

We have also undertaken two day cruises along the coast and we usually take part in the SAMM racing events, sometimes we even win.

Membership of the Group is open to all Members of SAMM for the cost of an annual membership of €20 for individual or €30 for joint membership. New members are always welcome as are new skippers.  The minimum requirement for skippers is an International Certificate of  Competence (ICC) and minimum skills to Day Skipper level. We have our own assessment and training as the handling characterists of Hamoor are very different to a monohull.
