The SAMM Race Program
is open to all boat owners and sailors, including non-SAMM members, of any Nationality, sex or age. You need no previous racing experience as many of our competitors did not sail until they came to Spain.
We use the British RYA Portsmouth yardstick Handicap System
(see http://www.rya.org.uk/racing/Pages/portsmouthyardstick.aspx) to race a mixed fleet of dinghies, catamarans and small day boats. At the moment the largest vessels are approximately 7 meters in length but we are able to include a cruiser class given sufficient interest.
All racing is on the Mar Menor with the start and finish close to the jetty of the “CAR Center, Infanta Cristina” at Los Najeros, just south of St. Javier airport. Boats can be launched from the CAR slipway but there is a small charge for using this.
Our Spring and Autumn Series both consist of six race days, two races per day, twelve total with the best eight to count for the series final placing. Additional one-off races include a “round the island” race, an “icicle” race during the Christmas/New Year period and a race to raise money for a local charity. Registration is from 10am, the first start at around 11.30am and the second at about 2.30pm. Each race takes about 1 hour for the fastest boats and our Rules are from the ISAF.
The entry fee is only 5€ per person per race day, paid on the day at the Registration Desk just inside the beach entrance to CAR. The money is used to run and maintain the work boat and purchase buoys and other equipment.
Our only requirement for entry is that you have third party and public liability insurance whilst racing and that you have some knowledge of the racing rules. We can help with the later and hold a reminder workshop each year. If you race regularly you will be required to act as an Officer of the Day on one race day per year.
You are requested to complete a Race Registration Form before racing so we can add your name to our email contacts list and keep you informed of race matters on a regular basis. Please read the important Notice of Race on this web site.
