The SAMM Race Program
is open to all boat owners and sailors, including non-SAMM members, of any Nationality, sex or age. You need no previous racing experience as many of our competitors did not sail until they came to Spain.
We use the British RYA Portsmouth yardstick Handicap System (see http://www.rya.org.uk/racing/Pages/portsmouthyardstick.aspx) to race a mixed fleet of dinghies, catamarans and small day boats. At the moment the largest vessels are approximately 7 meters in length but we are able to include a cruiser class given sufficient interest. All racing is governed generally by the ISAF Racing Rules of Sailing with a few local variations; see the “Local Rules – V9” document on the “Race Rules and Documents” page.
We run a Spring and Autumn Handicap Series on Sundays plus additional one-off events. This year’s dates are listed on the “Race Dates” page.
The start and finish are close to the jetty of the “CTD Center, Infanta Cristina” at Los Najeros, just south of St. Javier airport. Visiting boats can be launched from the slipway. Registration is at 10.00 am, the first start at around 11.30 am and the second at about 2.30 pm. Short course races take about one hour for the fastest boats. The slower boats in the fleet can take twice this time.
The entry fee is only 6€ per person per race day for SAMM members and 11€ for visitors, paid on the day at the Registration Desk just inside the beach entrance of CTD. The money is used to run and maintain the work boat and purchase buoys and other equipment.
Our only requirement for entry is that you have third party and public liability insurance whilst racing and that you have some knowledge of the racing rules. We can help with the later. If you race regularly you may be required to act as an Officer of the Day on one day during year.
You are requested to complete a Race Registration Form before racing so we can add your name to our email contacts list and keep you informed of race matters on a regular basis.
As nice as it is pottering about on the Mar Menor, take your sailing to the next level and come and join in the fun.
