September 18th Report

Wow, after an inauspicious first day of the Sailing Association Mar Menor’s Autumn Series, the second day on September 18th was fantastic with perfect weather and exciting racing.

The races take place from the CAR Sailing Centre at Los Narejos on the Mar Menor and are run under the RYA Portsmouth Yardstick handicap system.

The morning race started at 11am in a gentle 6.5 to 7.5 knot westerly wind with 8 boats competing over three laps of a short anticlockwise course. The light wind proved difficult for some and the results on corrected time were:-

1st John Clarke Miracle 44mins 25secs

2nd Tug Wilson Laser 2000 49mins 22secs

3rd John Down Pastanaca 56mins 18secs

4th Janice Penning Laser 13 57mins 56secs

5th Vernon O’Byrne Gamba 59mins 56secs

6th Edward Penning Weta 78mins 09secs

The Deltania and Sea Hopper did not finish.

By 2.30pm the wind had backed to South, South East and increased to 11 to 13 knots so the start line was changed and a figure of eight course set. Six boats started and fought an exciting three lap contest to provide a really exciting finish with only 16 minutes separating the whole fleet and only 1 second between the first and second placed boats. The results on corrected time were:-

1st Tug Wilson Laser 2000 32mins 36secs

2nd John Clarke Miracle 32mins 37secs

3rd E. Penning Weta 42mins 23secs

4th Ingo Wilson Gamba 44mins 28secs

5th Janice Penning Laser 13 44mins 28secs

6th Mick Burgess Sea Hopper 48mins 57secs

RACE1

The first race day of the Sailing Association Mar Menor’s Autumn Series on September 4th got off to a bad beginning.

The races take place from the CAR Sailing Centre at Los Najeros on the Mar Menor and the competitors and officials arrived to find that a children’s Optimist dinghy race was also organised. Just as the SAMM morning race was starting the crew of the safety boat were approached by organisers of the children’s race and told to change the course that had been set to avoid a clash. The resulting last minute confusion led to the race being abandoned.

The afternoon race started promptly at 2.30pm and six boats fought an exciting 3 lap contest in 15 to 17 knot winds. The racing is run under the RYA Portsmouth Yardstick handicap system and the results on corrected time were:-

1st John Clarke and Doreen Squires Miracle 51mins 15secs

2nd John Down and Mike Harding Laser 2000 53mins 17secs

3rd O. Midttun, L. Anderson

A. Young and B. Young Gamba 55mins 6secs

4th E. Penning and H. Lenhard Weta 57mins 48secs

5th B. Murray and O. Fseldsbo Weta 64mins 59secs

The Deltania of D and M. Scott did not finish.

Everybody is looking forward to the next race day on September 18th and the special MABS Cancer Support race on September 25th.
