Wednesday January 13th was an exciting day for SAMM members as, immediately after the AGM, the outgoing and incoming Commodores, watched by a large group of SAMM members, jointly launched the new SAMM support boat, a Whaly 435R, using a bottle of finest cava to anoint the hull.
The Whaly, a roto-moulded polyethylene Rib design, was identified as being ideal for the various uses the support boat has to cover after extensive research into the market. This Dutch made vessel is used extensively by many organisations around the world for patrol and rescue purposes; there is one in Mazarron harbour and another in San Pedro de Pinitar, both used by the local authorities.
The Whaly was ordered from a dealer in Cabo de Palos in November and was delivered mid-December. Since then a small group of SAMM members, led by Bob Miles, fitted out the boat with the engine plus the controls and other equipment necessary.
A new engine will be purchased as soon as funds allow and then the vessel should give many years of reliable and trouble free service.
