Training

The Skills Training Group enables more qualified and experienced members to share skills with less experienced members. Mike organises, as required, two group sessions one for Beginners and one for more experienced sailors aspiring to be Skippers. The sessions are held at CAR.  Arrangements are also made for groups of people who wish to sit the examination for the basic Spanish sailing Titulo qualification. It is the Certificate of Aptitude issued by the Sailing Federation of Murcia. Two groups have successfully attained the Titulo so far and received their certificates and credit size passes. Other Spanish sailing qualifications that can be taken are listed below.

Profile of Group Leader Mike Wright

In 1961 sailing was part of the training in the Royal Navy, so I had no option other than to learn! Heavy old Gunter rigged cutters, whalers and various types of dinghies were sailed in and around the Plymouth area. Sport in the Navy is encouraged, so I tried. First football, but someone always reached the ball before me. Then rugby, but the ball was a funny shape, and whenever someone passed it to me a load of heavy guys jumped on me. Cricket was too slow, and boxing hurt. Eventually it dawned on me that that I could get a lot of time off work if I did more sailing.  Most ships carried ‘Bosun’ dinghies, so whenever possible I had at least one afternoon a week off for sailing. When sent to a shore-based job this was supplemented with the occasional weeks ‘Adventure Training’ in a Nicholson 35: great! On leaving the Navy I joined our local sailing club, sailing mainly Toppers and Wayfarers. I also went crewing in a Sadler or Westerly whenever the opportunity arose. By now I had completed the RYA Day Skipper and Yachtmaster courses, and eventually purchased a ‘Snapdragon’ 27. Many happy weekends and holidays were spent around the south coast, with memorable cruises to France and the Channel Islands. Redundancy forced the sale of the boat, so I worked for a while as a yacht delivery skipper, which I enjoyed, but my bank manager didn’t. Work got in the way for the next few years, so I’m delighted to now be associated with SAMM, and get involved again in a great sport.
