Sail Boats

16 Years of Experience

The Sailing Association Mar Menor (SAMM) was formed in January 2006 and its purpose is to provide a meeting point for sailors in the area, and try to help solve problems experienced in keeping and sailing boats in the Mar Menor and Mediterranean.

SAMM does not offer professional training but has experienced members who can help novices to improve their skills.  You do need to be qualified to sail in Spain and help is given to Members to get their non-Spanish qualification endorsed by the Regional Authorities.  If you have no qualifications, help can also be given to get the basic Spanish “Titulo” which makes it legal for you to skipper a boat under 6 metres, with an engine of less than 40 Watts up to one nautical mile from the shore.

SAMM comprises individuals with their own boats, including larger Cruising Yachts, and Groups of people that jointly own different classes of boat. Day Sailers, both 18ft and 22ft, Dinghies and a Group with a Motorboat. SAMM also has an active Social Calendar and Race Programme, and welcomes non-members.

The Mar Menor

SAMM (Sailing Association Mar Menor), is based on the shores of the Mar Menor in Murcia, southern Spain. We have over 300 days of sunshine each year and the climate is perfect for sailing.

The Mar Menor (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈmar meˈnor], "Minor sea") is a salty lagoon, in the south-east of the autonomous community of Murcia, in Spain, separated from the Mediterranean Sea by La Manga, a sandbar 22 km in length and with a width ranging from 100 to 1,200 metres. It belongs to four municipalities: Cartagena, Los Alcázares, San Javier and San Pedro del Pinatar. With a surface area of nearly 170 km², a coastal length of 70 km, and warm and clear water no more than 7 metres in depth, it is the ideal location to go sailing. Its relatively high salinity, which aids flotation, and remarkable sporting infrastructures make this one of the most popular places in Europe for a wide variety of water sports. If you want to enjoy sailing on the Mar Menor, you can get in touch by using our Contact Page on this website or  email the secretary
